Ms. Geerdes was a teacher, literacy coach, school leader, and district literacy leader before joining the McKinley-Thatcher community. She was a teacher at Contemporary Learning Academy in DPS, as well as other schools serving students with unique learning needs, and she was the founding principal of San Francisco International High School, a college-preparatory high school for recent immigrant English learners. Previously, she oversaw the DPS Strategic Reading Initiatives for grades K-5 and supervised the 6th- 12th grade Literacy/Language Arts programs for DPS.

Sonia earned her teaching credential and Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from Oklahoma Baptist University, and holds a Master’s Degree in School Leadership via the New Leaders for New Schools program, as well as a Master’s Degree in Education Policy and Organizational Leadership from Stanford University. Sonia is intrigued by innovations in curriculum, assessment, and pedagogy that move communities toward educational equity around the world. Next on her bucket list is spending time in South America so she can learn more Spanish.
