Valerie Erickson
Gifted and Talented


Ms. Erickson is the GT teacher at McKinley-Thatcher. She holds additional certification in K-12 Music Education and holds a Flute Performance degree. She has taught GT for three years, and music in various capacities for seventeen years. This is her 3rd year teaching the GT program here at McKinley-Thatcher, and she also teaches at Columbine Elementary. She loves teaching GT and providing challenges for kids! Her students participate in activities such as the Shakespeare Festival, the Stock Market Experience, advanced math, advanced reading (novel studies and literary analysis) and writing, languages, independent projects, Destination Imagination, creative expression and engineering projects, video creating, etc. She also services affective needs of kids, to support their experience as gifted students. She has a young baby girl, Harmony. A Denver native, Ms. Erickson plays flute and piccolo in the Colorado Wind Ensemble, and principal oboe in the Thornton Community Band. She conducts the elementary band here at McKinley-Thatcher, and holds private lessons or tutoring when she is not teaching GT. She also loves spending time with family and friends, hiking, reading, crafts, traveling, and learning new things!
