Enrichment Programs and Special Events
![]() McKinley-Thatcher provides students with knowledge and experiences that relate to their safety and well being. The Second Step Program helps students in ECE through Grade 2 understand themselves and others. Second Step teaches empathy and problem solving and offers strategies for controlling impulses and anger.
Students in Grades 3 through 5 utilize the curriculum provided by the Steps to Respect Bully Proofing Program to learn freindship skills, how to deal with bullies, and how to help others who are being bullied. The school uses Safe School funds to provide an intern counselor from the Maria Droste Counseling Service. The counselor works with individual students and small groups.
![]() Students who qualify for the Gifted and Talented Challenge Program have extensive experiences with content beyond the core curriculum both in the classroom and in a special GT pullout program with our Gifted/Talented teacher. Activities change annually to meet the needs of the students in the Challenge Program. ![]()
SPREE engages students grades 1-5 in science, social studies, art and language arts activities centering around Denver's own historic South Platte River. SPREE activities include panning for gold, exploring early Denver history, studying environmental issues, and learning about the significance of the Platte River in past and present day Denver.
![]() A highlight for fifth graders is the annual two day overnight trip to Balarat, DPS's environmental outdoor education camp located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains near Boulder, CO. Participating students learn about the flora and fauna of the Rocky Mountains, try their hand at mountaineering skills, explore mining sites, and gain first hand knowledge of early pioneer life in Colorado.
