Dear McKinley-Thatcher Community –
I can’t believe it is already June and this school year is over! The end of a year is always bittersweet, and I want to take a moment to say thank you to our 5th grade families who are moving on to middle school next year. We are so grateful for all that you have done to support our students, staff, and the entire community over the past 8 years! It’s especially hard for me to say goodbye since we began our journeys at McT together. It’s my eighth year as principal here and I remember your babies as three- and four-year olds. I will miss them so much!
I’ve spent some time reflecting on how up and down this year has been: so challenging, and so rewarding, in so many different ways. This has been a difficult year for schools across the country as we work to carefully and diligently respond to students’ social and emotional needs, primarily due to the long-term impacts of the pandemic. On the other hand, there have been so many successes and celebrations this school year. Here are a few of the things we are excited about:
In other news… our staff recently completed six weeks of intensive professional development and self-reflection on our diversity and inclusion practices at McT. The most significant work for me personally was based on the writings of Robin DiAngelo. We read the text “Nice Is Not Enough – Combatting the Conspiracy of Silence”, and I continue to reflect on this quote and its importance for our staff: “All this system needs to keep on reproducing racial inequality—with whites benefiting from it— is for white people just to be really nice. Be really nice. Go ahead. Smile at your coworkers of color, go to lunch on occasion and do nothing else. And you will uphold that system because niceness is not courageous. Niceness is not anti-racism. Niceness will not get racism on the table and it will not keep it on the table when everyone wants it off the table.”
In recent news, the book publishing company Scholastic has been under scrutiny for asking an Asian-American writer of a children’s book to remove a reference to “virulent racism” from the author’s note before it would publish the book. Scholastic has subsequently issued an apology to the author. In light of this situation, we will explore other options for companies to host our future book fairs. The McKinley-Thatcher community of staff, families, and partners is committed to anti-racist education and support for all of our students and families, and we are eager to continue this work in the upcoming school year.
Please join us in a new adventure for all adults in the McT community (staff and families!) — we’ll be starting a book club this fall! Our books will be specially selected to help us explore learning about diversity and inclusion in our community. The first book is Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng. Please read it over the summer and look for a One Book, One McKinley Book Club invitation in the fall. We’d love to have your perspective and voice in our discussion.
We have a number of staff transitions for the 2023-2024 school year to share with families.
We are sad to say goodbye to…
Several of our staff members are transitioning to new roles:
We are excited to welcome our newest staff members!
The first three days of school are HALF DAYS for assessment purposes! This means that all students in kindergarten through 5th grade will have an individual assessment meeting with their teacher on the afternoon of August 21, 22, or 23. We’ll send out a sign-up form in August 2023 for assessment appointments.
Please click here to see our McKinley-Thatcher 2023-2024 school calendar, which includes all of the above dates!
Have a wonderful, restful, and safe summer break, and we can’t wait to see you again in August!
Sincerely,
Ms. Sonia Geerdes (she/her)
