Dear McKinley-Thatcher families –
What an extraordinary year it has been! Our students have impressed us time and again with their curiosity, kindness, resilience, and creativity. From mastering new academic skills to supporting one another through challenges, our learners have shown us what it truly means to be part of a caring school community. We are incredibly proud of each and every one of them.
As we end the school year, we are excited to share some happy news: we have won some incredible awards this year! And, with very few staff changes planned for next year, we look forward to continuing to build on our strong foundation of excellence. Read on to discover the remarkable accomplishments of our award winners and to learn about staff transitions for the upcoming school year.
To win the State of Colorado’s John Irwin Award, schools must demonstrate exceptional academic achievement over a three-year period, specifically earning an “Exceeds Expectations” rating on the Academic Achievement indicator of the School Performance Framework (SPF). The award recognizes top-tier proficiency in math, English language arts, and science. McKinley-Thatcher is receiving this award for our exemplary performance in 2023, 2024, and 2025. This honor reflects the dedication of our educators, students, and community to continuous growth and academic success. Congratulations, Eagles!
The Colorado Council of Teachers of Mathematics (CCTM) honors excellence in mathematics teaching in kindergarten through 6th grade education by recognizing teachers who demonstrate passion, innovation, and leadership. We are delighted to announce that Ms. Rebecca Schroeder, our 1st grade math, science, & social studies teacher, has been selected as this year’s recipient of the CCTM Mathematics Teaching Award.
Ms. Schroeder fosters a genuine love of mathematics in her classroom. Her McT 1st grade mathematicians are active doers and thoughtful problemsolvers. Watching students share strategies, articulate their understanding, and learn from one another reflects the powerful, student‑centered instruction she provides every day. Congratulations, Ms. Schroeder, on this outstanding and well‑deserved recognition!
Each year, the Colorado Teacher of the Year Program honors an exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable and skilled kindergarten through 12th grade classroom teacher to represent the entire profession in the state. Mrs. Kaitlyn Carson, our 2nd grade math, science, & social studies teacher, was nominated for this prestigious honor for the second year in a row! If she is selected, Mrs. Carson would be honored at a special ceremony at the White House and have the opportunity to go to NASA’s Space Camp. Congratulations, Mrs. Carson!
Several of our students completed and submitted original graphic novels to a Denver Public Schools (DPS) showcase event. Congratulations to these students for their amazing accomplishments:
As I reflect on this incredible year, my heart is full of gratitude for each and every member of this community. Your unwavering support, encouragement, and partnership have made all the difference in creating a community where our students thrive. Thank you for trusting us with your most precious gifts, your children.
As we head into the summer months, we wish you and your families a season filled with rest, joy, and lasting memories. We cannot wait to see you back here in August!
